The Problem with Christian Facial Hair

Sex sells in today’s world, and it’s hard to walk around without seeing a billboard, commercial or magazine article that elevates sensuality in order to sell a product or service. Christians should be different shouldn’t they?

This post isn’t going to be popular, but it’s definitely something that needs to be said. I greatly yearn for today’s men and women to find their identity in Christ. And while I believe the church of today is making big strides in helping men come to realize that their worth isn’t found in their scruffy looks, I can’t help but realize how many men of faith still choose to flaunt statuesque facial hair without realizing the harm it can have on other boys that are looking up to them in person, and on social media. I care about the young boys that I seeing come through our churches today. I’m not saying these men are doing it on purpose, but I am saying it affects people around them. You’re worth more than that.

From one engaged man to the rest of the world, it’s not helping my fiancé or anyone else for that matter. I would encourage you to not grow any facial hair that might make your brother or sister stumble. I don’t want adolescent boys thinking this is the way they need to man-sculpt when they grow up.

Flaunt Your Heart

I’m not ignorant enough to think that the only reason women lust is due to how gorgeous a man’s facial hair is. I’m not blaming men at all. That’s just simply not the case. The reality is that women, like men, are visual creatures, and I’d rather men be noticed for what’s in their heart rather than the hair on their faces — or chests.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

Mind you, I don’t expect all women and men to understand where I’m coming from. I’m strictly talking to the those who are calling themselves Christ-followers Why? Because you and I are held to a higher standard than the rest of the world, and we should live a life that is above reproach in all things. This includes our goatees and hipster mustaches.

Paint A New Standard

I wish more men and women would understand their duty to break free from what culture calls normal. We must raise the bar for righteous living and paint a new standard—one that isn’t telling the next generation of men that they need to have finely sculpted facial hair in order to get noticed in this world. The teenage boys of our nation depend on it.

The above is satire based on Jarrid Wilson’s “The Problem with Christian Cleavage.”

  1. Thank you so much for this insightful post. There have been so many times that I have been sitting in church, unable to concentrate on the sermon. The culprit? The man sitting next to me with facial hair. I am inexplicably drawn to furtively looking at him over and over. My heart races and my hands tremble uncontrollably. The sweat beads on my forehead as I helplessly wonder, “Am I the only one who notices? ” What a comfort to know that I am not alone in my struggle! Words cannot express my gratitude for your courage to bring this issue to light.

    1. Why do you say that? It’s SATIRE. Didn’t you read the tagline up the top?

I dig the point very well, R. L. – at least – I think it’s saying that if we’re going to preach to women about their bodies, etc (while tribal “heathens” of both sexes can run around naked) why on earth can’t we pick on men, and the way THEY look? That manly facial hair is only a parody of the feminine “sin of VANITY” after all!

Oh, and why do they fuss so when such evil reigns in this world??

Example: Read this exponentially disturbing tale (http://www.today.com/parents/florida-father-asks-police-supervise-daughters-spanking-1D80400270) and these causes (https://www.change.org/p/daniel-andrews-premier-victoria-have-an-enquiry-into-the-lost-dogs-home-and-it-s-administration-and-ask-why-so-many-dogs-are-being-killed-when-owners-are-searching-for-them-and-or-rescue-groups-are-pleading-to-be-able-to-rehome-them-the-ldh-is-a-disg and https://www.change.org/p/mayor-of-aurora-co-please-help-stop-the-torture-and-killing-of-dogs-and-cats-at-seongnam-s-korea) among many other things to see just how SICK this world is. And these conservatives would far rather fuss about how people dress. Shame on them.

PS: I hope you don’t mind my mentioning these things. They’re very important and I want something done about them.
